Summary

Starfield’s Creations marketplace isn’t all bad: it’s finally fixed one of the game’s most baffling quests. The addition of the Creation Club, a mod marketplace and a common mechanic across all of Bethesda’s major RPGs in the past 15 years, has already causedreview bombing and backlash forStarfield. That’s mainly because it requires players to purchase virtual currency before downloading certain mods, including a $7, one-and-done side mission put out by Bethesda itself.

But there are upsides toStarfield’s Creations. It allows console players to mod the game, a feature that’s normally unavailable anywhere besides PC. And it is nice to know that some modders will be paid for their hard work. Some mods, like theStarfieldCommunity Patch, also attempt to fix problems with the base game. Others aren’t quite so ambitious as a full-blown update, but still attempt to fix things the base game leaves out in creative ways.

Starfield’s Adoring Fan was a fun addition to the Settled Systems, but thanks to a mod, he is now far more of an asset to the crew.

Starfield’s “Eat The Rich” Mod Provides An Alternative Solution To The Paradiso Conflict

How A Starfield Mod Fixes “First Contact”

AStarfieldmod entitled “Alternate Paradiso Solution - Eat the Rich” allows players to resolve the quest “First Contact” the way the base game always should’ve: by attacking a group of greedy hotel executives, and allowing a group of lost colonists to settle on the world they’ve taken over instead. The mod is available via bothStarfield’sCreationsandNexus Mods. By default, this quest’s options are pretty lackluster, and the bad guys always seem to come out on top.

Here’s the situation: a colony ship that predates the invention of the grav drive and faster-than-light travel, theECS Constant, was originally set to land on the uninhabited planet of Porrima II and start a human colony there. However, with the ships' relatively low-tech mode of travel, it’s taken the crew almost 200 years to get there. When the player character arrives, theConstantremains in orbit. Its crew determines thatPorrima II has been taken over by the tourism industry, and turned into a luxury resort named Paradiso. TheConstantcan’t hail Paradiso because its communications systems are too outdated, and the rich board members at Paradiso don’t want to get their hands dirty in the event of any conflict. So, it ultimately falls to the player to negotiate a solution.

After speaking with the Paradiso board via executive Oliver Campbell, they’re effectively given three options: pay out of pocket for a grav drive so they can jump to an uninhabited world, allow them to settle on Porrima II in exchange for indentured servitude at the resort, or simply blow up their ship and kill them all. Notably, there’s no option to convince Oliver and the rest of the board that other people’s lives outweigh their profits, or even to attack them outright. No matter how the rest of the quest plays out, Paradiso remains on Porrima II, Oliver remains in control, and their profits remain unaffected.

Starfield Doesn’t Let You Eat The Rich, And It’s A Huge Letdown

Starfield doesn’t want you to play Robin Hood. The rich almost always come out on top - but it’s possible to help those in need with a few tricks.

The members of the Paradiso board are marked as essential NPCs, so they can’t even be killed.

Ultimately, “First Contact” feels like a missed opportunity - the player’s choice doesn’t have any meaningful impact on the situation. Butthe “Alternate Paradiso Solution” mod fixes this by giving players the opportunity to teach those selfish tourism executives a lesson, an option that was sorely missed in the vanilla game.

Starfield’s “Alternate Paradiso Solution” Mod Is More Complicated Than It Seems

New Choices For “First Contact”

But the “Alternate Paradiso Solution” mod does more than just remove the essential NPC marker on the Paradiso group and allow the player to attack them.It actually changes the very core of the quest to give the player a real opportunity to make a moral decision, and even affects how various NPCs respond to their choices.

For example, yes, with this mod installed, it’s possible to just throw a grenade into the Paradiso boardroom without so much as a word to Oliver Campbell, and technically complete the quest with theConstantcrew allowed to settle on Porrima II. Butmost of themain companions inStarfield, especially members of Constellation like Sarah Morgan, will disapprove of thisas indiscriminate murder. If they instead approach the situation diplomatically at first, and only attack Oliver when it’s apparent there’s no other option, their companions won’t bat an eye.

Starfield Is Getting Another DLC After Shattered Space, Todd Howard Confirms

More Starfield content is in the works, as confirmed by Bethesda’s Todd Howard, with hopes for many more expansions to come.

The “Alternate Paradiso Solution” mod succeeds whereStarfieldoften fails: it offers a morally fraught, impactful choice. It creates a meaningful moment out of a quest that, for all intents and purposes, otherwise always ends the same way. It may not make a huge difference in most playthroughs, but for certain kinds of characters, it might as well be considered essential. And, unlike many of the more controversialStarfieldCreations, it’s absolutely free.

Starfield

Bethesda Game Studios presents Starfield - the first original IP from the studio in twenty-five-plus years. Set in the year 2310, the United Colonies and Freestar Collective are observing a shaky truce after a war set 20 years prior. The player will customize their character as a member of a space exploration team called Constellation while navigating The Settled Systems and the conflicts between the warring factions. According to Bethesda, players can explore over 100 systems and 1000 planets to find resources and build their ships, living out their own sci-fi journeys.
