DC Comics is celebrating one of their best artists while also showcasing some of theJustice League’smost iconic costumes. Nicola Scott is best known for her “Class Photo” art covers of characters and their most iconic outfits side-by-side. DC first commissioned Scott to create one for Superman’s 80th anniversary six years ago, the success of which allowed her to subsequently develop the “Class Photo” series.
In an Instagram post, Scott announced that her covers areset to be republished, along with a new series of “Through the Ages” variant.In her post, the artist unveiled covers featuring Zatanna, Black Canary, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Green Lanterns, and Nightwing.

As Nicola Scott noted in her post, this is more than the culmination of years of artistic work and dedication; it is just the next step in what is shaping up to bea legendary run at DC.

According to Nicola Scott, this is the first time inher tenure with DCthat she has had the chance to draw Zatanna. That alone makes the release of her new “Through the Ages” exciting. Even more than that, however, thereaders who have responded enthusiastically to Scott’s covers over the past several years will be thrilled that she is being given further opportunity to shineas one of the company’s superstar artists. These “Artist Spotlight Variant Covers” not only look amazing, but they indicate the elevation of a notable talent.

As Nicola Scott detailed in her Instagram, DC first commissioned her to produce a retailer cover for Superman’s 80th anniversary, as an exclusive for Kings Comics in Sydney, Australia. The immensely positive fan response to her design for the variant was enough for DC to continue commissioning Scott, allowing her opportunities to pen similar covers for other DC superheroes over the years. According to DC’s press release:
The artwork for three of September’s Nicola Scott Artist Spotlight Variant covers exclusively debuted with Kings Comics, winner of the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award and Australia’s most well-known comic book and pop culture specialty store. These “Through The Ages” covers first appeared onAction Comics #1000,Detective Comics #1000, andWonder Woman #750and will now be included in this new Artist Spotlight series. Scott then turned her attention to DC’s Green Lantern Corps for aGreen Lantern 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular#1 variant cover featuring the Green Lantern Corps from the 1940s onwards, showcasing John Stewart, Alan Scott, Hal Jordan,Abin Sur, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Keli “Teen Lantern” Quintela, Sinestro, and Jessica Cruz. Scott’sNightwingcover has never been published but was made a fan-favorite image online by cheekily showcasing Dick Grayson’s evolution from Robin to Nightwing in DC’s comics.
