Summary
Fallout 4has no shortage of side quests and short questline to keep any Sole Survivor busy in between settlement building and looking for Shaun. While some demand an immediate hard choice be made, others are more of a slow burn, such as the trio of quests surrounding the strange Cabot House. What seems at first like a simple side job rapidly turns into an ethical dilemma that could potentially impact the entire Commonwealth.
The group ofside quests inFallout 4starts easily enough, with a ghoul named Edward Deegan approaching the Sole Survivor in one of three potential locations. He will offer a job to go and retrieve stolen property from some raiders, after which the head of the Cabot family, Jack, will have another job to retrieve a wayward family member. However, it is the third and finally quest for the Cabots thatoffers a difficult decision to the Sole Survivor regarding the fate of the family patriarch.

When returning to Cabot House with Jack’s sister, the Sole Survivor will be asked to accompany him to Parson State Insane Asylum to help stop a group of raiders from freeing Jack’s father Lorenzo. During the journey there,Jack will explain his father’s strange condition and why he’s been imprisoned there since 1898.“The Secret of Cabot House"will culminate in the Sole Survivor being asked to make the final decision about Lorenzo’s future, which can be made based on quest rewards or morals.

After fighting through the many raiders in the Asylum and picking up theCharisma bobbleheadfrom Jack’s office, Jack will implore the Sole Survivor to activate the switches that will kill Lorenzo in his cage. However,instead Lorenzo can be spoken to where he will state that everything Jack has said about him is a lie. He attempts to cast doubt on Jack’s mental state and reveals that the entire family has been feeding on his blood for over 400 years.
What makes Lorenzo Cabot such an unusual character is the strange crown that he wears that both he and Jack claim gives him odd powers. Jack reveals during the trip to the Asylum that after Lorenzo returned home with the crown, his personality changed, with Lorenzo becoming increasingly paranoid and violent. After a string of murders in 1898Jack used his family’s connections to keep Lorenzo off death rowby confining him in the Asylum basement.
Jack will run with the Sole Survivor from Cabot House to Parson, however his pathway routing is sometimes questionable and he can frequently get stuck on rocks or obstacles in the road. Simply fast traveling to Parsons and meeting Jack at the door is often better.
However, Lorenzo claims that it was at this point Jack began to experiment on him and learned that his blood could be used to halt the aging process. Since then, Jack, his mother, and sister have used Lorenzo’s blood to stay young, and without Lorenzo, they will die. Lorenzo is understandably furious with his family andwill confront and kill all three of the Cabots if released.

Like all the best RPGs, Fallout 4 gives the player the freedom to make moral choices all throughout the game, some of which are truly evil.
Freeing Lorenzo will give the Sole Survivor access to a continuous supply of the same serum Jack was using, this time with Lorenzo’s consent. The Mysterious serum gives a +5 Strength boost, +50 damage resistance, and removes 10 rads per second for 60 minutes. Although the serum is a useful item to have,several vials can be found throughout the Asylum, and four can be obtained from Lefty the raider leader. While this is not the same as having a continuous supply, it still offers a way for those wishing for a good playthrough to make use of the handy item.
There is one vial of serum on the ground next to a raider in the main entrance area. Three more can be found on a surgical tray on a table in the same room as Lorenzo’s cell.
Once free, it is possible to randomlyencounter Lorenzo in the Commonwealth next to some ghoul settlers he has killed, studying their condition. This apparently suggests that Jack was not lying about Lorenzo’s sociopathy and that releasing him puts the population in danger. There is also the option to free Lorenzo to speak with him but then kill him before he can leave the area with his cell, thus keeping the Cabot family and the Commonwealth safe.

The other option when arriving at Lorenzo’s cell is to do as Jack asks and kill his father. To do this forswitches around the room will need to be activated which will change the field surrounding Lorenzo’s cell. The energy field will switch from light blue to red, and Lorenzo will berate Jack as he dies. As the field is only lethal to Lorenzo once he is down, the cell can be safely opened, and Lorenzo’s cell can be entered.
Inside the cell is a copy of Massachusetts Surgical Journal, which will make any weapon inflict an extra 2% of limb damage and stacks with each issue found.Lorenzo’s suit can also be taken, which gives +2 to Charismaand can be upgraded with ballistic weave. Unfortunately, his crown cannot be removed; however, speaking with Jack after Lorenzo’s death reveals other plans for the artifact.

Fallout 4 has tons of places to explore and side quests to keep players busy, and some of them can end up being truly bizarre experiences.
Jack will express sadness at his father’s death but says that he knows it was the right decision as Lorenzo would have become unstoppable in a world"made for monsters”.After rewarding the Sole Survivor with 500 caps, Jack will say that he no longer needs their services, but they should come visit him in a week. After a week has passed in game, a notification will pop up to visit Cabo House, where Jack will have made Lorenzo’s Artifact gun.
It is possible to wait too long to return to Cabot House and miss out on gaining Lorenzo’s Artifact as Jack has aged. Because of this, it is best to return as soon as the notification appears.
Lorenzo’s Artifact gun is, in fact, a regular gamma gun with a dish mod based on Lorenzo’s crown. The mod used telekinesis to push targets away from the user, making it great for crowd control when enemies get too close. As well as dealing 25 explosion and 10 radiation damage,the mod can also be removed and added to any other gamma gun should a better model be found.
Siding with Jack offers the best rewards overallwith caps, a gun mod, and Lorenzo’s suit versus the mysterious serum. The choice between killing Lorenzo or freeing him can also be viewed as a moral choice, in which case the good option would still be to side with Jack and stop Lorenzo. Although this will cause the Cabot family to all perish, at least the Sole Survivor can take some comfort in knowing they prevented another monster being unleashed intoFallout 4’s Commonwealth.
