Summary

I was looking forward to the follow-up to this 100% Rotten Tomatoeshorror movie, and after years of doubt, I am glad it is finally happening. Since horror movie follow-ups do not always live up to the standards set by their predecessors, I always find myself questioning whether a critically successful horror flick has enough scope for franchise expansion. While some horror follow-ups likeJames Cameron’sAliensand Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’sThe Endlesshave perfectly expanded their original film’s stories, others likeHellraiser: RevelationsandHalloween: Resurrectionhave only worsened my concerns surrounding sequels.

Surprisingly, however, despite having a limited budget, an indie horror movie sequel managed to surpass its predecessor’s quality and expand its lore in such a brilliant way that I could not wait for its follow-up. My patience was tested, though, because this sequel premiered in 2017, and there were little to no updates surrounding its next chapter’s release. Thankfully, even though it took some time, the beloved indie horror franchise, which boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, is finally returning, and I could not be more excited.

20 Best Found Footage Horror Movies

Found footage horror has exploded in popularity during the last two decades in a similar way to slashers' popularity during the 80s and 90s.

It Took 7 Years, But A Creep 2 Follow-Up Is Finally Happening

Creep 2 Is Being Followed Up With A TV Show Titled The Creep Tapes

Directed by Patrick Brice and co-written by Mark Duplass and Brice, the firstCreepmovie directly premiered on video-on-demand before becoming available on Netflix for streaming. Since its streaming release, the horror movie has garnered a cult-like following because it perfectly balances horror with comedy without compromising either of the two genres. I coincidentally came acrossCreepwhen the neophyte in me skimmed through Netflix’s horror library, hoping to find something different to watch.

Owing to my terrible habit of checking a movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score before watching it, I looked upCreep’s critical ratings after finding it on Netflix. The rave reviews surroundingMark Duplass' unhinged performance and the film’s unique take on the found footage sub-genre had me sold. By the end of the day, before I knew it, I had watched bothCreepandCreep 2back to back without even thinking about checkingCreep 2’s Rotten Tomatoes score. It boasts a perfect 100%, which is not surprising. What is surprising, though, is that aCreep 2follow-up is finally happening after so long.

Mark Duplass' Initial Creep 3 Updates Were Discouraging

I Was Worried About The Franchise’s Uncertain Future After Creep 3’s Initial Updates

Even though I am usually cautiously optimistic about horror movie sequels, my anticipation for aCreepfollow-up knew no bounds after watchingCreep 2. Unfortunately, Mark Duplass' initialupdates aboutCreep 3were not too encouraging. The filmmaker confirmed (viaIndiewire) that, even thoughCreep 3was in the works, they had written it twice, and neither of the stories seemed good enough. He also added that they had to kill themselves to ensureCreep 2was a worthy follow-up to the first film, but even then, for Duplass, the film was not “as good as it could have been.”

Shedding more light on what they wished to achieve with the third installment, Mark Duplass revealedthey expected it to be “super inspired” but did not believe they were good enough “to make it worthwhile.“After going through Duplass' initial comments aboutCreep 3, I appreciated how he was focusing more on maintaining the series' integrity instead of leveraging the popularity of the first two films and pushing out a forced sequel. However, a part of me was also disappointed because the filmmaker’s early comments made the franchise’s future seem a little too uncertain.

Mark Duplass' Early Comments Make The Creep Tapes More Exciting

In Hindsight, It Is Good That Mark Duplass Took His Time With The Creep Follow-Up

Now, when I look back at Mark Duplass' early statements about theCreepfranchise’s future, I only get more hyped for the upcomingCreepTV series,The Creep Tapes. The fact that the filmmaker only wanted to make anotherCreepmovie if it was worthwhile almost guaranteesThe Creep Tapesfilm will be as good (if not better) as its predecessors. The Creep Tapesmay not be a sequel movie, butMark Duplass' initial struggles with figuring out the franchise’s future prove that he and Patrice Brice have put a lot of thought into what they wish to do next.

AlthoughThe Creep Tapesmight still disappoint and not live up to the high expectations set byCreepandCreep 2, Mark Duplass' track record of consistently delivering well-crafted and memorable stories makes me want to shed my doubts and hope for the best.

After watchingCreep 2and familiarizing myself with otherMark Duplass movies, likePaddletonandSafety Not Guaranteed, I was always confident that if aCreepfollow-up ever saw the light of the day, it would be handled with the same level of care and creativity that the two filmmakers bring to every project. AlthoughThe Creep Tapesmight still disappoint and not live up to the high expectations set byCreepandCreep 2, Mark Duplass' track record of consistently delivering well-crafted and memorable stories makes me want to shed my doubts and hope for the best.

10 Horror Movies That Innovated The Found Footage Trope

With the advancement of technology, there are a bunch of new inventive ideas being brought to found footage horror movies.

What Is The Creep Tapes About

The Creep Tapes Will Feature Half-Hour Episodes Following Peachfuzz’s Murders

In bothCreepmovies, the Mark Duplass serial killer character, nicknamed Peachfuzz, targets a new filmmaker, luring them to his home by offering a paycheck for documenting his life. However, the documentary always turns out to be a ploy for him to kill another victim before his victims can start taking his bizarre claims too seriously. Marking Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice’s return as co-creators,The Creep Tapeswill feature half-hour episodes that willwalk through all the viciously creative and dryly humorous methods the central killer adopts to find and murder new victims.

Although it is unknown whereThe Creep Tapesis set in the franchise’s overarching timeline, I am hoping it will unfold afterCreep 2’s events and shed more light on what happened after the movie’s cliffhanger ending. If this happens, Desiree Akhavan could reprise her role as Sara in the TV show. Even ifThe Creep Tapesdoes not continueCreep 2’s narrative, I will still watch it on day one because I have eagerly looked forward to thehorror moviefranchise’s follow-up for over a decade.

BothCreepmovies are available on Netflix for streaming.
