What Happened In One Piece Episode #1107?

Produced by Toei Animation; directed by Tasuku Shimaya

One Pieceepisode #1107, “A Shudder! The Evil Hand Creeping Up on the Laboratory”, continuedKuma’s backstoryby showing a crowd of people showing up and beating him up for running away, with Kuma feeling that he’d rather die than go back. It’s never said where he was supposed to go back to, but it was implied thatKuma was a slave to the Celestial Dragons, which is likely related to Kuma ascending to Mary Geoise. Bonney was initially forced out of Kuma’s memories, but she steeled her resolve to see it through to the end and went back inside.

As Bonney continued going through Kuma’s memories, the Straw Hats and the Satellites continued their search for Vegapunk, the Straw Hats also taking the time to marvel at more of Vegapunk’s inventions. During that time, communications and cameras kept mysteriously cutting out, with Shaka only ever seeing a shadowy figure as being responsible. Pythagoras encountered said shadowy figure and seemed to recognize them, and almost immediately after,Pythagoras was seemingly killed in a massive explosion.

The group of Usopp, Franky, Lilith, and Franky arrived at the scene and were startled by Pythagoras’ death, only to be relieved to learn that he survived by separating his head from the rest of his body. As Pythagoras desperately tried to explain what happened, York saw that S-Snake was in the area and simultaneously fawned over her while questioning why she was no longer following her orders. S-Snake responded by turning York into stone with her artificial Love-Love Fruit, making it abundantly clear thatS-Snake was the shadowy figure who attacked Pythagoras and destroyed the cameras.

One Piece Sets Up a Traitor with a Major Twist

One of the Vegapunks Is Working with the World Government

The reveal that the Seraphim are attacking the heroes, sets up the idea of someone betraying the heroes. The Seraphim would only go against their orders to remain on standby if someone ordered them to, and with Saint Saturn still on his way to Egghead and Vegapunk having been with Bonney for a while now, that means thatone of the Satellites took control of the Seraphim and betrayed everyone. Why one of them would do that is unclear, but future episodes ofOne Pieceare sure to elaborate on the reasons for their betrayal, at some point.

One Piece Episode #1107 Shows the Best & Worst of Toei Animation’s Style

Sanji Fans Will Be Unhappy with a Particular Scene

One Pieceepisode #1107 was another episode that thrived off of Toei Animation’s style of expanding on the source material. Despite episode #1107 largely being a transitionary episode,Toei Animation brought a lot of life toOne Piecethrough stellar artwork and animation, with every scene having gorgeous consistency and fluidity down to the smallest detail. Kuma’s flashback and S-Snake’s reveal were particularly great standouts, and they’re sure to not be the last theEgghead archas in store.

Regarding Kuma’s flashback, that was also handled incredibly well. Not only was the animation great to look at, butKuma’s backstory was slightly extended to emphasize the torment he suffered for running from the Celestial Dragons, all of which, of course, was made even more heartbreaking by Nobuhiko Okamoto’s delivery. Contrasting it with more shots of Kuma ascending to Mary Geoise sold that even further, and it’s a prime example of how goodOne Piece’s anime can be at extending the source material.

York in episode 1107

Unfortunately, episode #1107 also showed how bad Toei Animation can be at handling things. While the Straw Hats and the Satellites were looking for Vegapunk, Sanji told Stussy that he would become her dog, and while that was just a single line of dialogue in theOne Piecemanga,One Pieceepisode #1107 made a whole joke about Stussy making Sanji act like a dog, with Sanji even barking like one. It all felt like a disservice to Sanji’s character, but other than that,One Pieceepisode #1107 was just as good as one would expect it to be.
