Summary

Starfield, though much of its playerbase has moved onto greener pastures, still has plenty to explore. Not meeting the critical heights ofThe Elder ScrollsorFallout’s most universally beloved titles was enough for many players to move on in search of grander RPGs, but those who stuck around have found plenty of quests, characters and weapons to justify their dedication. And it looks like there’s plenty more to come.

Shattered Spaceis coming closer with every passing day, and not only has it riveted the players who have stuck withStarfield, but it’s also piquing the interest of those who have moved on since its release. There appear to be a lot more frights than we had once expected to come with the DLC pack, andthe expansion’s trailer that debuted at Summer Game Festhas lifted the lid on aStarfieldextension that goes all-in on intergalactic horror. Butthere are horrors to find in the core game first, it seems.

Starfield Is Hiding Intergalactic Horrors

There Are Grim Monsters in Starfield If You’re Willing To Seek Them Out

The latest trailer forShattered Spaceoffered a peek inside grim corridors and obliterated space stations that set the stage for what could be a horror-themed expansion. Some players have pointed out that scares are lying in wait in the base game for those willing to seek them out. Taking to Reddit, user-BlueLucid-shared a video of a shocking attack — as they shoot through Hunting Maggotmaw with relative ease,a giant beast tears through a slim opening and charges them, killing them instantly.

This monster is found during the Operation Starseed quest, in which players are tasked with checking in on a cloning facility on Charybdis III by three different societies who want to see different outcomes for it. Whether players want to destroy or hand over the facility is up to them — though their death in the facility likely won’t be. It’s clear that this mission, though compelling, is a treacherous one.

Starfield’s community has clearly identified that the encounter with the giant Hunting Maggotmaw is among the most horrifying in the game, with many reporting that they’ve been killed in a single strike by the beast. It’s not exactly an oil painting, either, standing as one of the ugliest monsters thatStarfieldhas to offer. What’s compelling, though, is what it can tell us aboutBethesda’s intentions when it comes to moments of sheer terror.

Bethesda Has Proved It Can Scare Players, And Shattered Space Could Take Advantage

A Terrifying DLC

Whether they intended to or not, Bethesda has shown its hand with this Hunter Maggotmaw encounter. Players in the replies to the video have revealed that they simply don’t know another intergalactic adventurer who didn’t die instantly when faced with the monster. Plus, it seems that every person in the replies was at least alittleshocked to see a mass of meat and teeth racing towards them at full speed.

This is exactly the kind of encounter we could be in for in theShattered Space DLC— after all, the trailer has revealed mysterious distress calls from a spaceship with no records, corpses suspended in low gravity, and translucent beasts of incredible speed. It’s clear that whatever lies in wait on the abandoned space station kills with ease, and it could just as easily do the same to the player. There is some very cult-like imagery, like statues and prayer circles, too, meaning that any horrors could be a front for thetruenasties ofShattered Space.

The firstStarfieldDLC seems to be drawing a lot of inspiration from intergalactic horror, withAlienstanding as the easiest comparison, and it could make the game better for it. After all, afterTodd Howard’s “Skyrimin space” promise, it’s clear that the game’s identity has been hinging on that of others for some time, even before it came to release. The expansiveness ofStarfield’s space could give way to monsters that we can barely fathom, and in many ways, that’s exactly what an expansion to the stretching, sprawling cosmos of the game needs to rope early players back in.

10 Things Starfield’s Shattered Space DLC Must Include

Starfield’s base game already has a ton to do and explore, but the upcoming Shattered Space DLC could expand the story and provide even more content.

Starfield Could Be About To Get Scary, & It Could Be Just What It Needs

Shaking Up Things With The Shattered Space DLC

The attack of the Hunting Maggotmaw is a shocking eventuality inStarfield, but inShattered Space, it could become much more. The DLC has the opportunity to take a bold new tonal direction for the space adventure title, and given that many players have abandonedStarfieldsince launch, it could be just what the game needs. A shot in the arm for Bethesda’s most ambitious title could finally show naysayers what the company had intended for the game in the first place.

There are as many spooks as there are goofs scattered acrossStarfield’s cosmos, and players could be in for a real shock whenShattered Spacehits storefronts. Developing tonal consistency across a giant spacefaring romp proved difficult for Bethesda, but taking a smaller approach could lead to a concise, consistent, and atmospheric adventure. Or it could just fill Shattered Space with more Hunting Maggotmaws because, clearly, that’s all it needs to do to get a jump out of its community.
