Sony announces PS5 price increase halfway through generation

Sony has just announced a price increase for thePlayStation 5in select markets, raising the cost of the console halfway through its generation. Markets impacted include Europe, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Four and a half years since the PS5 first hit store shelves in November, 2020, the hardware is now more expensive than ever in selection regions.

Sony announced a new price increase on April 14, effective immediately.Citinga “challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates,” Sony has decided to raise the PS5’s price in various markets.

Those in Europe and the United Kingdom now need to spend more to get their hands on the PS5 Digital Edition, while those across Australia and New Zealand will need to pay up for both the PS5 Digital Edition and the Standard PS5 with the UHD disc-drive.

While the PS5 Pro’s price has remained the same, the two other SKUs have been slapped with increased price tags, differing from region to region.

This comes just days after Sony alsoannouncedprice increases for PlayStation Plus in several markets, including in Australia.

These hikes come roughly halfway through the console generation, at least if we’re framing around the mid-gen PS5 Pro refresh.
