Naruto’s Portrayal Of Family Makes The Series Unique

The Traditional Notion Of Family Is Rejected For A Broader Definition

Masashi Kishimoto believed that society’s definition of family was too narrow, and that the term should be extended further than just a term to refer to blood relatives. He cited Naruto and Jiraiya’s relationship, as the two were basically family and were not related. Jiraiya was the master of Naruto’s father and his godfather, so the two were connected well before Naruto was born. A better example is Naruto and Iruka’s relationship. Despite harboring the beast that killed his parents,Iruka accepts Naruto and becomes his first father figure, and the two develop a bond thicker than blood. In fact, Iruka served as his father figure during Naruto’s wedding.

“The word “family”, as most people understand it, is too limited as far as I’m concerned. Especially since I’m writing for children who may or may not face the problem of parents divorcing.”
